Previous studies of potential risks associated with naturally occurring radioactive material in oil and gas fields in California used bulk radioactivity measurements complemented by laboratory analyses of ²²⁶Ra and ²²⁸Ra. This study found that ²²⁴Ra is a major component of the radium inventory in California oil field water and thus should be included in any future studies based on radium.
