224Radium Is the Predominant Radium Isotope in California Oil Field Waters
Key Finding in McMahon and others (2018).
Previous studies of potential risks associated with naturally occurring radioactive material in oil and gas fields in California used bulk radioactivity measurements complemented by laboratory analyses of 226Ra and 228Ra. This study found that 224Ra is a major component of the radium inventory in California oil field water and thus should be included in any future studies based on radium.
